Your answers, and what happens to them
One Question asks everyone the same question each day. You answer Yes, Not sure or No, and at 8pm you see how everyone who answered split. This page explains, plainly, what that involves.
- No account, no sign-in, and we never ask for your name, email or phone number.
- Your answers are kept under a scrambled code made from your copy of the app, not from you.
- Everyone else only ever sees totals. Never who answered what.
- There are no adverts, analytics services or tracking in the app at launch. If that changes, we'll update this page first and tell you in the app.
- You can delete your answers in the app at any time.
Who we are
One Question is run by Get One Question Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 17514308), registered office 5 Goldington Road, Bedford MK40 3JY. We decide how your information is used, which makes us its "controller" under UK data protection law.
Questions about your data: hello@getonequestion.com.
What the app sends us
When you first open the app, it makes a key in your phone's secure chip, using Apple's App Attest, and registers it with our server. We keep an identifier for the key, its public half, Apple's receipt for it, a counter and the date it was registered. These let us check that answers come from a genuine copy of the app, which helps keep fake answers out. They tell us nothing about who you are.
On Android, the app does the same job with a key in your phone's secure hardware: when it first answers, it registers the key with its certificate chain from Google's key attestation, and each request carries a Google Play Integrity check. We keep only the key's public half and the date; the certificates and the Play Integrity checks are read once to confirm the app is genuine and aren't kept. We never ask for your phone's serial number, IMEI or advertising ID.
When you answer, the app sends:
- Your answer (Yes, Not sure or No) and which day's question it was for.
- Proof from your key that it's a genuine copy of the app. From the key, our server makes a scrambled code with a secret only our server knows, and keeps your answer under that code, apart from the key's details.
- The time the answer arrived, and a random reference for that send, so an answer that's sent again after a dropped connection is only counted once.
- Which version of the agreement you accepted (see below), kept with the answer as a record that you agreed.
When you first open the app, it asks you to agree that your answers can be kept under your scrambled code, because some questions touch on views such as politics or religion. You don't have to agree, but you can't answer without it, as an answer can't be counted without being kept. You can withdraw at any time in Settings: Withdraw my agreement, which also deletes your answers.
Once, about four weeks after launch, the app may ask one question about One Question itself: how you'd feel if it stopped. It's optional. If you answer, we keep that answer under the same scrambled code, count it only as totals, and delete it after 90 days.
When you delete your answers, the app sends a request proved with the same key, so only your copy of the app can delete its answers. We count how many times this happens each day, as a number only.
The app also downloads each day's question and results, which are the same for everyone.
We never receive your name, email, Apple ID, contacts, photos or location. Like every website and app, our servers see the internet address your phone connects from while it's connecting; we use it only to deliver the answer and keep the service safe, and we don't store it with your answers.
The code means one answer per copy of the app. It isn't a person: if you delete the app and install it again, you get a new code, and we can no longer link your old answers to you, because we never knew who you were.
What stays on your phone
Your own past answers, your streak and your settings stay on your phone. Reminders are set on your phone; we don't know whether you have them on.
This website
This website uses no cookies or analytics today. If that changes, this page will say so first. Cloudflare, which runs it, sees the internet address your browser connects from while it's connecting, as every website's host does.
If you email us
If you email hello@getonequestion.com, we get your email address and what you write, and use them only to reply. We delete them 12 months after our last reply, unless the law needs us to keep them longer.
Who sees what
- Everyone using the app sees the results from 8pm: how many answered, and how the answers split. Never who answered what.
- We can see each answer with its time and scrambled code, to run and check the results. We can't see who you are.
Why we use it
To run the service you asked for: counting answers, publishing the results, allowing one answer per copy of the app, and helping keep fake answers out. We also use totals (how many copies of the app are set up, how many answered each hour, how many came back, the four-week question) to see whether One Question is working and to improve it; never to build a picture of you.
Under UK data protection law, our reason (legal basis) is our legitimate interest in running One Question fairly and keeping it hard to abuse. Because an answer can show a view on something like politics or religion, which the law treats as more sensitive, we also ask for your explicit consent when you first open the app. You can withdraw it at any time in Settings (Withdraw my agreement), which also deletes your answers.
Who handles it for us
| Who | What for | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare | Runs our servers and this website: receives answers, stores them, counts them and serves the results. | Answers are stored in the EU. Requests are handled at the Cloudflare location nearest you, which can be outside the UK and EU; Cloudflare's data processing terms include the safeguards UK law requires for that. |
| Apple | App Attest checks that the app is genuine. The App Store delivers the app. | Apple's own services. |
| For the Android app, once it's released: Play Integrity checks that the app is genuine, and Google Play delivers it. | Google's own services. | |
| Cloudflare and Google | Emails you send to hello@getonequestion.com arrive at Cloudflare, which passes them to our mailbox, run by Google (Google Workspace). | Google's own services, which can be outside the UK; Google's data processing terms include the safeguards UK law requires. |
We don't sell your information or share it with anyone else, apart from where the law requires it.
Sharing
Nothing is shared unless you share it. Share cards leave out your answer unless you choose to include it.
Questions that touch on strong views
Some questions touch on things people feel strongly about, such as politics. The law treats views like these as more sensitive, so we ask for your consent when you first open the app, use answers only to count the results, and never use them to target you with anything. Your answers are never linked to your name, you never have to answer, and you can delete your answers at any time.
How long we keep it
Your answers stay linked to your scrambled code for 24 months. After that our server removes the code and keeps the time only to the day, so an old answer can no longer be linked to your copy of the app or to your other answers. Once each day's results are counted at 8pm, we keep answer times only to the minute. The key your copy of the app uses is deleted if it isn't used for 400 days; Apple's check that came with it is kept for 30 days. Your answer to the four-week question is deleted after 90 days. You can delete your answers sooner at any time. The published results (totals only) are kept for good, as a record of how people answered each day.
Your choices and rights
- Delete your answers: in the app, go to Settings, then Delete my answers. Results already published don't change, because they're totals. Deleting doesn't withdraw your agreement; Withdraw my agreement does both. If the question of the day is still open, a marker stays until 8pm so it can't be answered twice.
- See your answers: your own past answers are shown in the app.
- Ask about your data: email hello@getonequestion.com and we'll explain what we hold and help where we can. As we never know who you are, we can't tell from an email which answers are yours, so the way to delete them is in the app. If you ask us to act on your data by email, we'll tell you what we can and can't do and why, within a month.
- Complain: you can contact the UK's Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk. We'd appreciate the chance to put things right first.
Children
One Question is meant for people aged 13 and over. It's built to be safe for teenagers by default: no account, no profile, no location, nothing shared unless you share it, and your answer left off share cards unless you include it.
Changes
If we change how we handle your information, we'll update this page first and change the date below. Anything significant, such as adverts arriving, we'll also say in the app.
